About Stubbe

How a small tobacco company serving the local market grew to become an international player without losing sight of its family traditions.

Family tradition

Stubbe Tobacco company was founded in 1943 by Maurice Stubbe. As the father of Frans Stubbe and the grandfather of the business’s current manager Lieven Stubbe, he began on the very same site as where the factory still stands, producing loose tobacco for the local consumer. Cigars and cigarettes were added later on. Up until 1989, when Frans Stubbe decided to focus only on rolling tobacco. After all each type of product requires a specialised manufacturing process and this remains challenging to combine. In 1992 Lieven Stubbe was the third generation to get involved in the company. Lieven took over as manager in 2006. To date the company Tabaksbedrijf STUBBE n.v. still remains 100% in the hands of the STUBBE family.

Continuous growth

Since its foundation in 1943 Stubbe Tobacco Company has managed to increase its annual production to 2,300,000 kg. The factory area that covered just 3,000 m² in 1999 has in the meantime grown to a size of around 20,000 m². The entire production process is fully automated and computer-operated. This naturally keeps manufacturing costs down, but is mainly to allow for continuous improvement in the quality. Although, early on, the market was limited to local consumers, increasing numbers of new export countries were approached over the years. Currently, in 2016, the biggest export markets are Germany and the Benelux. With a network including a number of distributors the key brand ‘The Turner’ can also be found in other European markets and even in countries beyond Europe.
